The suggestion that myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus type 2 (RHDV2) are not infectious diseases but instead represent “detoxification events” is not supported by any recognised scientific evidence. Both diseases are well described viral infections that have been repeatedly demonstrated, over many decades and in many countries, to spread between rabbits under controlled experimental conditions as well as in the field. Their pathology and laboratory confirmation are also consistent worldwide.
Environmental contaminants can of course affect wildlife health, and this is something taken seriously where there is evidence to support concern. However, they do not explain the characteristic lesions, mortality patterns, and transmission behaviour seen with these viruses. Similar outbreaks occur in areas without the contamination sources you refer to.
Your statement that vaccines have never been shown to prevent disease is also incorrect. Vaccines against myxomatosis and RHDV have been demonstrated internationally, both experimentally and in routine veterinary use, to reduce illness and mortality in rabbits exposed to infection.
