Fiber is composed largely of an indigestible compound known as
cellulose, just like a significant part of trees and tree bark are.
The bottom line is that fiber actually seems to cause harm. It can block
nutrient absorption, we cannot break it down, and it causes
microabrasions in the gut lining. It also increases mucus secretion and
immune dysregulation. -
You can prove this to your mom by showing her the most clinically significant study on fiber where they took a small size of people with severe ibs symptoms and cured all of them with a zero fiber diet.
I believe it's this one: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3435786/#:~:text=With regards to straining%2C all,had symptoms of anal bleeding. -
If she makes an argument about the gut microbiome/gut flora benefits, tell her that first of all, mainstream science doesn't even understand the first thing about the gut microbiome. We don't even really know universally what a 'healthy' gut microbiome looks like. Secondly, tell her that we have analyzed the Inuit before they were industrialized and they had excellent gut microbial diversity with a zero fiber diet. Generally, all they ate was seal blubber.
